The Sultan’s Tent Cafe, review Nov 2018

A Moroccan night out in Toronto at The Sultan's Tent!

This weekend we booked a table at The Sultan’s Tent & Cafe Moroc for a new experience.  We walked into a beautiful French Moroccan style cafe/lounge, a well decorated common area to enjoy as you wait for your table.  The front staff welcomed us to and took us to our table.  The Sultan’s Table is an entertainment area, they offer 2 seatings with a large selection for the table d’hote menu (check the website for the full details). The night starts with appetizers, as we enjoyed the Moroccan music that played in the background.  Our first course is selected, the crab cake is my choice, it was a crispy, filled with flavours and well proportioned.  My daughter had the amazing hummus that you can see in the photo.  Smooth, flavourful with the crispy pita chips and sides of veggies, I have travelled in many countries that served hummus, this was at the top of my favourites.  The restaurant is decorated in a French Moroccan style with cabanas.  Lit with beautiful lanterns with the candles on the tables enhancing the mood.  The large comfortable chairs created a bit of privacy between each section.

My main, a well presented braised lamb shank on a bed of saffron rice, filled with crispy vegetables adding the Moroccan touch with the pairing of dates.  The meat fell off the bones, tender and juicy stacked with flavours. The saffron rice is proportioned perfectly and prepared to perfection making this a perfect match for my Moroccan themed evening.

The Piri Piri chicken main course that my daughter had was a little spicy adding the smoothes mashed potatoes combination with the crispy fresh veggies.  The spiciness was just enough to make it a successful choice for her main course.

The evening is rolling nicely, the second glass of red wine is served, the music changes beat and the show begins.  The belly dancers move from table to table, if your sitting inside the tents, they make it to your section and stay alert as they will be inviting you to learn or dance with them.  The 3 talented belly dancers make it a great addition to the evening as we continued to the next course or my favourite part of the meal.  Desserts are my weakness, especially something that comes with pistachios. The baklava, mmmm my favourite meal to eat hehe.  If you want to close a deal with me, serve me some baklava, coffee and we can sit and chat for a while.

A wonderful evening is coming to an end, we had a beautiful date night.  Daughter and dad night happens every so often with us as shes away studying.  We take advantage of these nights to try new culinary experiences in Toronto, giving us time to catch up and for herself, a night away from studying. It’s a great way to catch up, also discovering new restaurants to talk about.  One little thing I almost forgot, I finished her creme brulé before we left The Sultan’s Tent.

Needs to know: free street parking in a well-lit area that as is located near the Saint-Laurent Market area. Offering a cafe/lounge area for early arrivals to enjoy cocktails. 2 seatings nightly on weekends, I do recommend reservations to accommodate small to large parties. The restaurant lighting is dim inside the restaurant but a very comfortable atmosphere.  The menu contains something for everyone that includes beef, chicken, some vegetarian, meat and seafood.  The restaurant is located close to the Saint Laurent market, at 48 Front Street East, the reservation number is (416) 961-0601. #add
